Exhibition « Women and water in West Africa »

In West Africa, both in urban and rural areas, women are entirely responsible for water for the daily life of the family : drinking, cooking, washing and doing laundry. For millions of women or young girls, water isn't available in the house or within the compound. They must walk several hundred meters or sometimes a few kilometers, with a container that, once filled, is most often carried on their heads. Despite these heavy burdens, water fountains, drillings, wells and ponds become places of life and socialization, mutual help and joyful exchanges.

In Côte d'Ivoire

The first part of the exhibition comes from fieldwork conducted in the summer of 2024 in Côte d'Ivoire as part of a sociology thesis. Gagnoa, located in central-west Côte d'Ivoire, is experiencing rapid urbanization, marked by the emergence of new neighborhoods. This is the case in the “Sans Lois” (« Lawless") neighborhood, where, with the exception of electricity, residents have no access to other basic services, including water. The photos show a setup with a borehole connected to a tap, providing free water. Water here is also used to produce beverages and sell them. In the village of Demidougou, about ten kilometers from Gagnoa, you have to go to a well to get water.

In Niger

The second part of the exhibition is based on the work of two professional photographers in Niger and France, illustrating the activities carried out by the Tarbiyya Tatali collective, of which AECIN is a member. In Dogondoutchi, in a peripheral neighborhood or the village of Lougou, standpipes are managed by women, and water is not free. Ponds are often used for laundry. Access to water therefore remains a priority in rural areas. Loire-Brittany Water Agency and the Water Authority of the Rennes Basin' support for water access initiatives in Niger came to an end following the coup d'état in July 2023.

The exhibition's presentation

The exhibition was created for the Village of Sciences and displayed at the Champs Libres in Rennes from October 4 to 6, 2024. On Friday 4^th, nine groups of schoolchildren visited the exhibition, while Saturday 5^th and Sunday 6^th, were dedicated to the general public.

It is being presented again at the Long Prés Socio-Cultural Centre from March 23 to April 3, 2026 on the occasion of World Water Day as part of an initiative of AECIN, CEBR and the Gorom Rennes Gorom association.

Interdisciplinary project supported by the Brittany Doctoral College and developed by the Equality Mission of the University of Rennes and the Ille-et-Vilaine Niger Cultural Exchange Association (AECIN).

Exhibition The millet, a rich legacy full of promises

Millet is a very old cereal, still the staple diet of a large part of the population in Sahelian countries in Africa (particularly in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger). It is resilient to climate change and tolerates poor soils, drought, and challenging growing conditions.

2023 has been declared the “International Year of Millet” by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

The exhibition provides a better understanding of millet and the challenges involved in preserving and developing its cultivation. It also illustrates how millet pervades, in various domains, the social practices within the Sahelian region.

Exhibition from November 17^th to December 1^st 2023, open during EPI Condorcet (Saint-Jacques de la Lande) opening hours: Mondays and Thursdays (1:45 PM - 6:30 PM), Tuesdays and Wednesdays (8:30 AM - 12:30 PM and 1:45 PM - 6:30 PM), and Fridays (8:30 AM - 12:30 PM and 1:45 PM - 6:30 PM).

The exhibition's opening, on Thursday, November 23^rd, starting from 5 PM, offers an opportunity to get together for a tasting and a storytelling reading session.

In 2024, the exhibition was presented from October 3 to 31 at École 3A in Rennes and from November 12 to 29 at Pont des Arts in Cesson-Sévigné.

As Solidarity Exchanges can no longer take place, we cooperate at various levels with experts, to support young people's promising projects for sustainable development in Niger,

For example :

In 2014, a high school student worked on the layout of our Magazine
In 2020, a student in data processing developed a geographic database of actions in Dankassari and more generally in the Dogondoutchi department.
In 2021, a political science student wrote articles for our website and Magazine on decentralization and the development index in Niger

The action speeds up in 2021, with:

For two students in computer science: Improving the geographical database of actions in Dankassari and beyond in the Dogondoutchi Area.
For twelve students at the Rennes School of Business, within the Reciprocity project: Whatsapp exchanges with young Niger students, drafting an article for our Magazine, or a crowd campaign for school supplies at Karki Malam, (Dankassari).
For three female students in Nantes, support Mahamadou Saïdou Hope School in Niamey.

In 2024, an Applied Foreign Language internship will enable us to update our website in English and Haoussa.

Solidarity Markets and Jumble Sales

As a result of the COVID pandemic these activities have been suspended.

Solidarity Markets.

AECIN is present at various solidarity markets in and around Rennes.

The most important one is the World Solidarity Market in Rennes, which AECIN joins every year. Nigerien crafts as well as books and photos are sold there. The 2011 stall was particularly attractive with its offer of samples of Nigerien food. (see diaporama).
AECIN and Friends of Niger also participate in the Betton World Solidarity Market.

AESCD has been present at the Cesson Christmas Market from 2009 to 2011 and again in 2014 and 2015. The soapstone Nativity cribs have been quite successful there.

In 2015 and 2016 Tarbiyya Tatali attended the Nigerien Cultural Event organized by CoNiF, where its books and booklets as well as the Harmattan publications on Niger were available.

Jumble Sales.

AECIN has taken part in the Canal St Martin Jumble Sale in Rennes for years. A variety of objects on sale in a friendly atmosphere.

Since 2010, AESCD has been present at the Cesson Jumble Sale with its Baobab Refreshment Stall. Cakes made by members, hot and cold drinks, and contacts with the general public. Very few sales on that occasion. We thank the organizing Committee for its financial support, and the Cesson Solidarity Associations, among them AESCD.

Extracurricular workshops

AECIN, together with other international solidarity associations coordinated by Rennes's International Center (The Japanese Center, Craftsmen of the World, GREF) operated extra-curricular workshops in 2013-2014 and in the first term in 2015-2016, in the Léon Grimault Primary School in Rennes.

The Léon Grimault school adopts the Freinet method, created by Célestin Freinet, a pedagogue and primary school teacher in the first half of the XXth century. It is based on the natural method, which springs from the child's experience.

Creativity, cooperation and self-reliance are at the driving forces of the learning process.

The one-hour workshops, spread over 10 weeks, with 10 or so children per group, enabled the children to discover Niger, its culture, way of life, inhabitants, in a playful manner.

At the end of the school year, the children put up an exhibition on the countries discovered during the year.

Film shows on Niger

The Nigerien cinema has a remarkable tradition. Tarbiyya Tatali shows Nigerien films and organizes debates with Nigerien directors.

On March 3^rd, 2013, the Sevigne cinema showed ‘Sand Wind, Stone Woman', by Nathalie Borgers, with Amina Ahmed, Mariama Badi.
Debate with Hussam Hindi, artistic director of the Dinard Film Festival, and Marie-Françoise Roy, President of the Cesson-Dankassari Solidarity Exchange Association.

In 2014, ‘For better and for Onion' by the Nigerien director Sani Magori was shown on November 19^th, in presence of the director, at the Rennes International Center. A debate followed on November 19^th. Sani Magori was then interviewed by Joris Le Guidart.

In 2015, on the occasion of the Nigerien director Aïcha Macky's visit in Rennes:
‘Koukan Kurcia, the Go-Between ', by Aïcha Maky was shown. A debate followed, with Aïcha Macky and Marie-Françoise Roy, president of Cesson-Dankassari Solidarity Exchanges Association.
“Knowing how to make the bed”, by Aïcha Macky was shown at the Rennes International Center on Tuesday March 3^rd and Saturday March 7^th, a debate with the director followed. Two further shows took place, in St Brieuc, at the Beaufeuillage school and at the La Bobine Cinema in Bréal sous Montfort, during the Africa Screen Festival.

On November 16^th, 2016, when Amina Weira, the Nigerien film director, came to Rennes, her film Anger in the Wind was shown at a cinema in Rennes, l'Arvor, followed by a debate with Amina Weira.

In 2018, at the Arvor Cinema in Rennes, on Tuesday November 27^th at 8p.m, and at 6pm at EPI Condorcet, at St Jacques de la Lande on Wedesday november 28^th, Appoline Traore's film, Frontières, was shown, as part of the Solidarity Festival. This film was awarded twice at Fespaco 2017; it deals with the obstacles to free travel in West Africa through the odyssey of several girls.

In 2023, a screening of the film The Forest Maker by Volker Schlöndorff was held at Cinéma Le Sévigné in Cesson. This event was followed by discussions on agriculture in Niger with Jean-François Grongnet, Emeritus Professor at Agrocampus Ouest, and Bernard Jouan, President of Agro Sans Frontières.

In 2024, screening at the Cinéma Le Sévigné in Cesson of the film Marcher sur l'eau by Aissa Maiga, followed by discussions with Christian Bazin from the Gorom Rennes Gorom association. Bawa Kadadé, president of CulturePlus, did not receive the visa that would have allowed him to take part in the discussion.

International Solidarity Week

The Solidarity Festival takes place in November in Rennes. As of November 2017, it replaced the International Solidarity Week after 19 years.

AECIN is actively involved, within the MIR in Rennes.

AESCD has been involved for about ffteen yearss, in Cesson-Sévigné. In 2014, ANIRE also participated.

Screening of the film “Le courage en plus” by Billy Touré and Laurent Chevallier at the Cinéma Le Sévigné on Monday, November 17, at 8:30 p.m., followed by a discussion with Laurent Chevallier. This partnership is between the Association for Cultural Exchanges of Ille-et-Vilaine, Niger (AECIN), the Association for Transport Services for the Disabled (ASTH), the Cinéma Le Sévigné, the French Wheelchair Network, and VraiVrai Films.

Evening “Colonial Crimes, What Reparations? The Case of Niger” on Tuesday, November 18, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Maison Internationale in Rennes. Screening of the film “African Apocalypse” and discussion with director Rob Lemkin. Organized by the Association for Cultural Exchanges of Ille-et-Vilaine, Niger (AECIN), with the support of Amis du Monde Diplomatique and the Section du Pays de Rennes de la Ligue des Droits de l'Homme.

From November 14^th to 29^th, we hosted Maman Chamadou, who carried out a mission from RAEDD to establish and follow up the AESCD and AECIN actions, as a French Government guest (with travel and insurance expenses from the French Embassy in Niger) and as a Cesson Sévigné Town council guest.
At the Rennes International Center, AECIN Tarbyya Tatali, with DEFI, the NFO, UNICEF 35, International Solidarity, organized an event focused on inequalities in water access; Rennes primary school classes were invited from November 15^th to 26^th. The Rennes Business School and students from the Saint Aubin d'Aubigné Rural Family Center were trained to supervise the activities (exhibition, games, videos, debates).

“Family Agriculture, an Asset for our Planet”, an exhibition held from October 27^th to November 7^th at the International Center in Rennes and from November 13^th to the 21^st at the Citizen's Hall in Cesson.

Wild Giraffes, from Niger to Cesson-Sévigné

Has the Niger White Giraffe escaped extinction ?

Niger's white giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis peralta) is a subspecies distinguished by the pale spots on its coat.

From only 50 individuals in 1996, its population has risen to 366 in 2012. Threatened by drought, by exploitation of the acacia they feed on, by the transformation of the savannah into millet fields, and by poaching, the giant of the bush was nearly wiped out.
Thanks to the action of ASGN (the Association to Safeguard the Giraffes of Niger) and to the State's involvement, the population of Niger's giraffes has narrowly escaped extinction.

The last self-sustaining herd of Niger giraffes lives in the South-West of Niger, in the Dosso region in Kouré. The giraffes regularly come to forage in the villages of Dankassari, over 200kms from Kouré, particularly at the harvest season of niebe beans, a favourite fodder of theirs. They then have to be guided northward, to prevent them from crossing the border to Nigeria where poaching sometimes occurs.

To save the Giraffes, one must support the local population.

Following that principle, the last of Niger's giraffe herd benefits from a rescue program combined with a rural development program and with ecotourism activities.

The ‘Giraffe in the Wild' Project, from Niger to Cesson-Sévigné.

Early in 2014, Jean-Pierre Estournet and Abdoul Aziz Soumaïla photographed and filmed Kouré giraffes while reporting in Niger.

The ‘Giraffe in the Wild'Project will include several events in Cesson-Sévigné starting on May 19^th 2014:

Exhibitions : from May 26^th to early July : photos of wild giraffes, exhibited in the open air, in Jean Boucher Square. From May 19^th to June 6^th, in the Citizen's Hall, four panels showing the action of ASGN.
Films: a new 10-mn film (edited by Yves Quenec'hdu) and an 8mn presentation of the action of the Doué-la-Fontaine Bioparc action in favour of Niger giraffes, both shown at the Citizen's Hall.
Conference: May 27^th, at the Science Hall in Rennes, within the ‘Science on Tuesday' Program. Lecturers : Pierre Gay, director of the Doué-la-Fontaine Bioparc and Jacques Rigoulet, veterinary surgeon, Botanical and Zoological Gardens Department, Natural History Museum.
Events: on May 27^th, in Cesson, Pierre Gay will explain how giraffes are identified thanks to their spots.
A competition for school children: based on a quiz, with wood or brass giraffes as prizes for the best answers.

Ephemeral Disco for Dankassari

Following the Mayor of Dankassari's visit to Cesson, the Young People's Town Council is organizing Ephemeral Disco #2 for the 9-13 age group at the Carré Sévigné, on Saturday February 8^th from 7 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.
The proceeds will be devoted to the electrification of the Dankassari Welfare Center by solar energy.

Prescription glasses for Niger

This project was established through an agreement signed on January 21^st 2013 between the Jean Guehenno High School in Fougères and AESCD.

The agreement stipulates:

That the Optician Course students at the Jean Guehenno Vocational High School in Fougères should collect glasses, repair them, identify their dioptres and pupillometry and hand the glasses over to AESCD.

That AESCD should send the glasses to Niger, give the High School a detailed account of how they are used, and publish the results on its website.

RAEDD is in charge of a fair distribution of glasses in Dankassari

First dispatch of prescriptions glasses in July 2013.

Over 200 pairs of prescription glasses prepared by High School students , with accurate labeling of their corrective degree was handed over to the optics technician at the Dogondoutchi Hospital by the AESCD chairperson, in the presence of Doctor Aissa, in charge of our Health project.

The distribution of prescription glasses will be organized as follows :

The optics technician will go to Dogondoutchi on market days to prescribe glasses.

Adults users, who are either craftsmen or state workers, will buy a pair of glasses for 10,000 CFA (about 15 euros), far cheaper than current prices.

Children's glasses will be sold 1,000 CFA each.

A detailed follow-up is to be recorded.

The Prescription Glasses action since 2013

The Mayor of Danassari brought a new stock of glasses to Dankassari in 2013.

There has been a change in the allotment of glasses: after being sorted out by the students in Fougères, the glasses are brought to Niger during missions organized by AESCD or visits by RAEDD members. They are given to the only doctor of the Dankassari rural commune, who examines patients' eyesight and prescribes free glasses. About 200 to 300 glasses are thus delivered every year. The project has been carried on, from 2013 to 2018, involving contacts with the students at the Fougères School, and annual delivery of glasses to Dankassari

Best Apprentice in France

Angélique Blin,a student at the Jean Guehenno High School in Fougères, has received the 2019 Gold Medal as Best Apprentice in France🇫🇷 , for a pair of glasses in Niger's colours🇳🇪 with cowrie inserts.

This activity has been suspended since the summer of 2023 due to the impossibility of traveling between France and Niger.
